PSCHE
At Higher Lane Primary School, pastoral care and nurture provision are at the heart of our ethos. We are committed to supporting the whole child, ensuring that every pupil feels valued, cared for, and encouraged to thrive.
We recognise that children’s mental health and wellbeing are as important as their academic progress. As needs continue to evolve, we place a strong emphasis on equipping pupils with the tools they need to self-regulate, build resilience, and develop positive self-esteem.
A key part of this work is our use of the myHappymind programme, which helps children understand how to look after their own mental health and wellbeing. Pupils learn practical strategies to manage their emotions and grow into confident, resilient individuals. Those who require additional support are never alone — they know who to turn to, and we are proud to have a full-time Learning Mentor on site to offer guidance and care.
We also deliver the SCARF programme, which plays a vital role in supporting emotional wellbeing. Through fun, age-appropriate activities, SCARF encourages children to:
• Understand and manage their feelings
• Develop empathy and positive relationships
• Build resilience and confidence
• Navigate social and emotional challenges effectively
This strong foundation supports not only individual growth but also helps us create a positive, inclusive, and supportive school environment, where every child feels safe, happy, and ready to learn.
